How to Book Cruises for Families of Five or More
Finding affordable stateroom accommodations can be difficult for families of five or more, as the vast majority of staterooms are restricted to four person occupancy. Here are tips for finding the right cruise fit for larger families:
1.) Book two staterooms: One configuration that works well for families of older children is to book one Oceanview or Balcony Stateroom for the parents ACROSS from an Inside Stateroom for the kids. While you will pay the adult price for the 1st and 2nd person in each stateroom, the Inside stateroom prices are often much less expensive (and the kids don't need a view!).
For those with younger children, two connecting staterooms is also a good option as most ships do have staterooms with a connecting door between them.
2.) Family Staterooms: NCL, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity all now have 'family' staterooms that can accommodate five and some even six people. These are more affordabel than the family suites and while it can be a tight fit, families generally do not spend much time in their stateroom anyway. Specifically, Royal Caribbeans new Oasis and Allure of the Seas have many stateroom options for families of five.
3.) Family Suites: If your budget allows, nearly all ships now offer luxurious Family Suites that hold five, six and sometimes 8 or more people NCL is the leader in this option with Family Penthouse Suites in an exclusive area called the Haven - these come with Butler Service, a private pool and even access to private restaurants just for guests of the Haven. Royal Caribbean recently introduced similar accommodations on the new Allure and Oasis in the LOFT area of their ship. These are one of a kind!
